Ben Affleck refuses to buy $6,000 sneakers for his son and reveals the surprising lesson he taught them
A video has gone viral of actor Ben Affleck refusing to buy expensive Air Jordans for his 13-year-old son, being careful not to spoil him too much.

Ben Affleck is a successful actor, director, and producer who’s been involved in Hollywood for more than 40 years. He earns around $55 million annually and has a net worth of $150 million.
Despite all that, he wouldn’t buy his 13-year-old son a pair of $6,000 Dior Air Jordan 1 sneakers.
Ben Affleck teaching his children real value
In a video that went viral on the internet, Affleck is seen browsing some sneakers at a convention. His son picked up the pair of Jordans with the $6,000 price tag and Affleck told him, “that’s a lot of lawns you’ve gotta mow there.”
Affleck appeared on TODAY with Jenna & Friends and talked about the viral video, telling Jenna Bush Hager that he is trying to teach his children that they have to earn money.
“Listen, you love your kids and you want to give them everything and do everything for them,” said Affleck. “But I think you do them a disservice by not [communicating that] if you want something, you have to work for that.”
“My son who’s 13 is reckoning with that reality as he looks at no shoes in his closet,” he said. “He’s got shoes, but no crazy expensive fancy shoes. I’m like, ‘Well, if you want that, you can work 1,000 hours. And once you’ve worked that, you might not want to spend it on a pair of sneakers.’”
Affleck mentioned that his two oldest children, who are 19 and 16 years old, both have jobs. He spoke about having to work hard to earn his own money at their ages too. When he was a teenager, he and friend/fellow actor Matt Damon had a joint bank account that they used to pay for acting auditions. Now, he’s instilling that same work ethic into his children as he attempts to show them the value of money.
