What is the Chitlin Circuit?

The first part of the tour’s full name, Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin’ Circuit Tour, references Queen Bey’s Cowboy Carter album. But what was the Chitlin’ Circuit?

It’s a reference to venues friendly to African-American performers during the era of racial segregation in the United States. The term chitlin’ refers to a Southern dish of boiled pig intestines, called chitterlings.

Music journalist Preston Lauterbach, author of the book The Chitlin’ Circuit: And the Road to Rock ‘n’ Roll, said on NPR: “The Chitlin’ Circuit was African-Americans making something beautiful out of something ugly, whether it’s making cuisine out of hog intestines or making world-class entertainment despite being excluded from all of the world-class venues, all of the fancy white clubs and all the first-rate white theaters.”
