Florence Pugh reveals the one movie she regrets making: “I was young and needed money.”

A certain horror film is “the only film I wish I had never made,” says the Marvel actress.

Florence Pugh Malevolent

Florence Pugh has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actresses, thanks to a strong career and remarkable versatility across a wide range of roles.

She has excelled in dramatic films like ‘Little Women’ and ‘Oppenheimer’, tackled action-oriented projects such as her portrayal of Yelena Belova for Marvel Studios and her role in Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ saga, and even made a mark in the horror genre with ‘Midsommar’. However, there is one film she wishes she had never made—a horror movie and Netflix production from her early days as an actress: 2018’s ‘Malevolent’. “I needed the money,” Pugh admitted.

The Hollywood star recently appeared on Louis Theroux’s podcast, where she discussed her love for horror—and, in particular, singled out the one film in the genre she regrets. Directed by Icelandic filmmaker Olaf de Fleur Johannesson, ‘Malevolent’ follows two siblings who con people by exploiting “paranormal problems,” only to stumble upon a case that turns out to be very real. Pugh stars alongside Ben Lloyd-Hughes and Celia Imrie.

“I love horror. I even watched ‘Malevolent,’ not as a documentary—I just watched it,” Theroux told Pugh, to which she admitted she hadn’t seen it since filming. “It’s probably the only movie I wish I’d never made. I think everyone has one of those movies,” she said.

Pugh then explained why she took the role: “I think it was a film I made when I was younger and needed money. I thought, ‘Well, obviously it’s great.’ And then I got there and it wasn’t,” she reflected. Critics and audiences seem to agree with her assessment. ‘Malevolent’ holds a 54% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, while viewers have given it a mere 18%. For those willing to endure a less-than-stellar horror experience, ‘Malevolent’ is available to watch on Netflix.
