Born Cynthia Ann Smith in 1957, she was adopted by a Canadian couple. She graduated from Monessen High School in 1975 and attended Bethany College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theater in 1979. Three years later, she graduated from Yale University with a Carol Dye Award in Drama.

She began her career in television, working on series such as ‘Hill Street Blues’, before transitioning to film. She is married to director and producer Joel Coen, who has directed her in several films.

Her second Oscar victory came for her role in ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ (2017). She also won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for ‘Nomadland’ (2020).
