The star of "Emilia Perez" was criticized for some old racist and Islamaphobic tweets she'd posted on Twitter. This joke was a nod to that, of course.

Oscars honoring Los Angeles
The Los Angeles wildfires that happened in January devastated the city and left thousands of homes destroyed and 29 people lost their lives. The Academy Awards will honor the city of Los Angeles tonight, as well as those who risked their lives to fight the fires.
"We will honor Los Angeles as the city of dreams, showcasing its beauty and resilience, as well as its role as a beacon for filmmakers and creative visionaries for over a century. We will reflect on the recent events while highlighting the strength, creativity, and optimism that defines Los Angeles and our industry," Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang wrote.
Oscars controversy
The film with the most nominations this year is Emilia Perez with 13 nominations, making it the most nominated foreign language film in Oscars history.
But it's not without its controversy. The movie is about a transgender Mexican gangster who undergoes gender-affirming surgery to leave the cartel and start over. But critics argue that director Jecques Audiard cast predominantly non-Mexican actors and poorly portrayed Mexico, as well as criticized the accents of the actors as inaccurate. They also argue that the movie reinforces negative stereotypes about the country. The main character's operation and the aftermath are viewed by critics as trivializing real issues like violence and the cartel and oversimplifying transitioning.
Still, the film has been praised for its storytelling, cinematography, and technical achievements. But critics also argue that the Oscars are quick to award any progressive film, regardless of if it portrays social issues accurately.
