Bay Area rock group Green Day is to perform in the opening ceremony at February’s Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, it has been announced.

“Right in our backyard!″

The three-piece band, led by singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, will help to celebrate the event’s 60th anniversary by “usher[ing] generations of Super Bowl MVPs onto the field”, read a news release on the NFL website.

“We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard!” Armstrong said. “We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”

Formed 39 years ago in Rodeo, California, Green Bay has won five Grammy Awards and sold an estimated 75 million-plus albums worldwide.

In 2024, the band’s 1994 breakthrough album, Dookie, became only the 13th ever to be certified double diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America, having sold more than 20 million units in the U.S.

Who else is performing at Super Bowl LX?

The singer-songwriter Charlie Puth is to sing the U.S. national anthem at next month’s title game. “America the Beautiful” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” are to be performed by the musicians Brandi Carlile and Coco Jones, respectively.

Super Bowl LX’s halftime show, meanwhile, is to star the Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny. Earlier this month, the three-time Grammy winner released a trailer for his Super Bowl performance:
