Guillermo del Toro reveals the big message behind all of his best films

From his earliest films, Guillermo del Toro has portrayed supernatural beings with a distinct blend of fantasy and drama.

Adapting Frankenstein, the first science fiction film, has been a dream he has chased for more than three decades, one he has finally achieved with the help of Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz.

With this ambitious project, the Mexican filmmaker reinforces the idea he has explored in acclaimed works such as The Shape of Water and Pinocchio. In his own words, Del Toro’s work is all about the importance of accepting difference.

Speaking at a New York Times event, Del Toro revealed the idea which forms the basis of many of his best works.

“If I can make a film that tells someone it’s okay not to fit in, that it’s okay to be imperfect, that it’s okay to be different, then I’ve done what I came here to do. We all deserve a place where we can truly be seen without having to disguise ourselves to fit in,” he said at a 2018 event celebrating the release of The Shape of Water.

That film earned Del Toro the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director. His later projects Nightmare Alley and Pinocchio also received strong praise from the Academy. This successful run suggests that his adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel could be one of the favorites for this year’s Academy Awards and Frankenstein is already getting rave reviews from critics and huge streaming figures on Netflix.
