Guillermo del Toro is fresh off his Oscar win on Sunday for ‘Pinocchio’, and is already gearing up for a new production with stars Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, and Andrew Garfield in early talks to take part, according to sources.

The new project will focus on Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel ‘Frankenstein’, something del Toro has been working on for years, as part of his multi-year deal with Netflix, with multiple projects already in different stages of development.

‘Frankenstein’ has been a long time in the making

Del Toro has been itching to make something in the world of ‘Frankenstein’ for quite some time, but hasn’t had an opportunity to do so, and wasn’t sure if it would ever happen.

“I had an idea to do Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. … I really believe that the movies I do, most of the time, I do them because the premise is so absolutely bonkers,” he said at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival.

Sources have since told Deadline that actors Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, and Andrew Garfield are gearing up to appear in the project with undetermined roles. It’s also unclear how faithful to Shelley’s work the project will be.

Del Toro is still working on the script, and no formal offers have been made to the actors, but sources say they are on board to participate in ‘Frankenstein.’

The series would come after del Toro’s recent Netflix series ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities’, a horror anthology that premiered last October.

Del Toro’s continuing success

Del Toro’s Oscar for ‘Pinocchio’ on Sunday comes after two wins in 2017 for ‘The Shape of Water’, which won Best Director and Best Picture. His film ‘Nightmare Alley’ was nominated for Best Picture in 2022.

In 2007, the Mexican director was nominated for ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ for Best Screenplay and Best Foreign Language film.

Del Toro’s prospective stars for ‘Frankenstein’ have enjoyed their own success. Garfield most recently starred in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and Netflix’s ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’ both earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

Isaac appeared in the award-winning 2021 movie ‘Dune’ playing Leto Atreides, and also in the Marvel series ‘Moon Night’, playing the eponymous character.

Goth has a starring role in Ti West’s ‘X’ trilogy, acting in ‘X,’ ‘Pearl’ and the upcoming ‘MaXXXine.’ She also appeared in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Suspiria’ in 2018, inspired by the original Dario Argento film of the same name.
