Patriots’ Day and marathon 2026: Which roads are closed in Boston today, April 20?
Today, Patriots’ Day is celebrated in Massachusetts, with Boston also hosting its annual marathon. Here are the streets that will be closed.

Today - Monday, April 20 - marks Patriots’ Day, one of the official state holidays in Massachusetts. On top of that, this Monday also brings the 130th edition of the Boston Marathon, meaning numerous streets across the city will be closed.
Patriots’ Day commemorates the Battle of Lexington, the first battle of the American Revolutionary War, fought on April 19, 1775. It has been a state holiday in Massachusetts since 1894, although it has been celebrated on the third Monday of April only since 1969. The Boston Marathon, meanwhile, dates back to 1897.
Streets closed for the Boston Marathon and Patriots’ Day 2026
Boston authorities are urging residents and visitors to plan ahead and use alternative transportation, as parking restrictions and multiple street closures will be in effect for both the Boston Marathon and the Patriots’ Day Parade.
Streets along the final stretch of the marathon route - from Brookline through the finish line on Boylston Street - will be closed to vehicle traffic from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The Patriots’ Day Parade, meanwhile, begins around 9:15 a.m. at City Hall Plaza and winds through Downtown and the North End. The parade route follows Court Street, Cambridge Street, Tremont Street, Winter Street, Bromfield Street, Washington Street, State Street, Congress Street, and Hanover Street, finishing at Paul Revere Mall.
In addition, street closures and parking bans will be in effect on the following streets:
- Exeter Street (east side), from Boylston Street to Blagden Street
- Blagden Street (south side, opposite the library), from Huntington Avenue to Exeter Street
- Blagden Street (north side, library side), from BPL Driveway to Exeter Street
- Boylston Street (both sides), from Exeter Street to Dartmouth Street
- Boylston Street, eastbound through Copley Square Mall, from Dartmouth Street to Clarendon Street
- Blagden Street (north side), Dartmouth Street to BPL Driveway
- Hereford Street (both sides), Boylston Street to Public Alleys #443 & 444
- Exeter Street (west side), Alley 441 to Boylston Street
- St. James Avenue to Stuart Street
- Clarendon Street (both sides), from Public Alley 436 to Newbury Street
- Newbury Street (both sides), from #29 Newbury Street past Berkeley Street to #69 Newbury Street
- Arlington Street (both sides), Beacon Street to Isabella Street
- Beacon Street, Brighton (both sides), Chestnut Hill Avenue to Brookline Line
- Beacon Street, Back Bay (south side, Public Garden side), Charles Street to Arlington Street
- Berkeley Street (both sides), Columbus Avenue to Commonwealth Avenue
- Belvidere Street (both sides), Huntington Avenue to Massachusetts Avenue
- Boylston Street (both sides), Massachusetts Avenue to Dalton Street
- Cambria Street (both sides), Boylston Street to the Hynes Convention Center loading dock
- Charles Street South (both sides), Park Plaza to Boylston Street
- Chestnut Hill Avenue (both sides), Commonwealth Avenue to Beacon Street

What’s open and closed in Boston for Patriots’ Day and the marathon?
State and municipal offices across Massachusetts - including those in Boston - are typically closed in observance of Patriots’ Day. Public schools, libraries and state courts are also closed.
Federal offices and federal courts, however, remain open. Most retail stores, supermarkets and restaurants operate on regular hours, and banks are generally open as well.
