Marilyn Monroe was an American film actress, model, singer, and producer who became a great commercial and critical success in the 1950s. However, to the surprise of many, she was never awarded an Oscar or received a nomination.
Marilyn Monroe: Career and Awards
Monroe began working in film in 1946, when she signed a contract with 20th Century Fox. From there, she worked on several low-budget films, such as ‘The Shocking Miss Pilgrim’ (1947) and ‘Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay!’ (1949). Then, in 1950, she played two small roles in ‘The Asphalt Jungle’ and ‘All About Eve’, both of which were critical and box office successes.
In 1953, she starred in three films: ‘Niagara’, ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’, and ‘How to Marry a Millionaire’. These were followed by ‘River of No Return’ and’ There’s No Business Like Show Business’.
In 1955, she starred in the film The Seven Year Itch, for which she received her first BAFTA nomination for Best Actress. Later, she starred in the Joshua Logan-directed film Bus Stop, in which she played a cabaret singer and dancer. This role earned her her first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.
Later, she founded Marilyn Monroe Productions, which produced ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’, for which she received a new BAFTA nomination. In 1959, she starred in ‘Some Like It Hot’, which earned her the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. In 1961, she appeared in ‘The Misfits’, her last film and the one that brought her worldwide recognition.
