Robert Redford, a Hollywood great who won the Best Director Oscar, has died at the age of 89.


Robert Redford, the legendary actor and filmmaker, has died at the age of 89, it has been confirmed.
Redford is survived by wife Sibylle Szaggars, two children from his previous marriage, and several granchildren.
“Surrounded by those he loved”
Redford’s death was confirmed on Tuesday, the publicity firm Rogers & Cowan PMK revealing that he “passed away […] at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved.”
A Best Director Oscar winner for 1980’s Ordinary People - and a Best Actor nominee for 1973’s The Sting - Redford enjoyed a stellar six-decade Hollywood career, accruing over 50 acting and directing credits on the big screen.
Aside from Ordinary People and The Sting, he is also best known for films such as 1969’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1972’s The Candidate and 1976’s All the President’s Men.
Redford’s marriages, children and grandchildren
Away from the screen, the California native was married twice. In 1958, he tied the knot with Lola Van Wagenen, a historian and activist with whom he had four children. Redford and Van Wagenen divorced in 1985.
In 2009, Redford married Szaggars, a German-born multimedia artist who had been his long-time girlfriend.
Redford outlived two of his four offspring. Son Scott died at just two months old in 1959, due to sudden infant death syndrome. In 2020, he and Van Wagenen’s other son, James, died of cancer.
The former couple also share two daughters: Shauna, 64, and Amy, 54. Per People, Redford is survived by seven grandchildren.
