Everything you need to know about the 2024 Oscars

Scorsese’s Origins

His childhood in Little Italy and his Italian and Catholic background have shaped the course of his career as a director. After graduating from New York University, he made his first short films and the feature film ‘Who’s That Knocking at My Door’ in 1967. In 1973, he premiered his first major gangster film: ‘Mean Streets’.

The first success came in 1976 with ‘Taxi Driver’ and four years later with ‘Raging Bull’. Here began his relationship with Robert De Niro, with whom he has collaborated over the last five decades. The first Scorsese film featuring DiCaprio would come later, in 2002 with ‘Gangs of New York’.

Scorsese’s Nominated and Awarded Films at the Oscars

He has been nominated as best filmmaker ten times, the living director with the most nominations in history, one above Spielberg and two below the eternal William Wyler. His nominations for best director are: ‘Raging Bull’, ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’, ‘Goodfellas’, ‘Gangs of New York’, ‘The Aviator’, ‘The Departed’, ‘Hugo’, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, ‘The Irishman’, and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’. He has only won the Oscar for ‘The Departed’.

As for best picture, he has received four nominations: ‘Hugo’, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, ‘The Irishman’, and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’. So far, he has not won the Oscar in this category. Regarding best adapted screenplay, he has two nominations: ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘The Age of Innocence’, without success.

In total then, he has 15 nominations and has only won once, in 2007 for ‘The Departed’.
