Were Fiennes to surprise the odds, it would be the first Academy Awards win of his more than three-decade career on the big screen.
What film is Ralph Fiennes nominated for?
The 62-year-old has been nominated for Best Actor, for his performance in Conclave, Edward Berger’s widely-praised adaptation of Robert Harris’s 2016 novel of the same name.
In Conclave, which revolves around the election of a new pope, Fiennes plays Cardinal Thomas Lawrence - a character who is tasked with running the ballot as he deals with doubts about his faith.
Fiennes’ portrayal of Cardinal Lawrence is lauded as “phenomenal” by Guardian film critic Wendy Ide, while Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri has described the role as “perfect” for the Briton, who is now a three-time Oscar nominee.
When was Fiennes nominated before?
This is Fiennes’ first Oscar nod since 1997, when he was nominated for his role as Almásy in Anthony Minghella’s hit romantic war drama The English Patient. While the film scooped no fewer than nine Academy Awards, Fiennes was beaten to the Best Actor statuette by Shine’s Geoffrey Rush.
Three years earlier, Fiennes received the first Oscar nomination of his film career, for his depiction of Amon Göth in the holocaust drama Schindler’s List. Like The English Patient, Steven Spielberg’s film swept the Academy Awards, winning seven accolades. However, Fiennes, who was a contender for Best Supporting Actor, lost out to The Fugitive’s Tommy Lee Jones.

Who are the other 2025 Best Actor nominees? Who’s the favorite?
Fiennes has been nominated for Best Actor alongside Adrien Brody, for The Brutalist; Timothy Chalamet, for A Complete Unknown; Colman Domingo, for Sing Sing; and Sebastian Stan, for The Apprentice.
Brody and Chalamet are the bookmakers’ favorites for the award, according to the betting comparison website Oddschecker. Fiennes is rated as third-most likely to win, with Domingo and Stan the apparent outsiders.
Brody is the sole former Oscar winner on among the five nominees. If the 51-year-old scoops Best Actor, he will become only the 11th multiple recipient of the gong in Academy Awards history, having previously won it in 2003, for The Pianist.
