Another day, another piece of sad news for fans of film and television: Isiah Whitlock Jr. has died at the age of 71.

As confirmed on social media by his agent, Brian Liebman, the American actor passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 30, from an undisclosed illness.

A Wire favorite

Whitlock Jr. was born in South Bend, Indiana, in 1954, and spent four decades working in film and television.

His most iconic role was as Clayton “Clay” Davis in The Wire, a series that also recently mourned the loss of another cast member, James Ransone.

As Davis, Whitlock Jr. became the owner of a distinctively-delivered, oft-repeated catchphrase, drawing out the first syllable of “shit” so it was pronounced “shee-it”:

Law & Order, Wonderland, Queen, The Good Wife, FBI, and Goodfellas are also among the standout series and films in his career.

May he rest in peace.
