It’s not Ghostbusters or Groundhog Day: This is the Bill Murray comedy he calls ‘perfect’
Bill Murray has appeared in numerous films where he’s put his comedic talents on show, but there is one that he says that he couldn’t have done better.

Bill Murray cut his comedy chops at The Second City before moving onto The National Lampoon Radio Hour and then Saturday Night Live, he’s considered to be one of the best comedians to have been part of the cast of the latter which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. From there, he moved on to movies where he shot to fame for his roles in films like ‘Caddyshack’, ‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘Groudhog Day’.
Murray made a name for himself with his improv comedy talents and offbeat characters. But the role he played in ‘Broken Flowers’, Murray told Sean Evans: “I didn’t think I could do better than that,” during an episode of ‘Hot Ones’ over some wings with a sampling of spicy hot sauces.
Broken Flowers “was sort of a perfect movie”
When asked by Evans if there is a movie that he made, that after the fact thought he could never do a better job Murray didn’t hesitate to say ‘Broken Flowers’.
“I thought that was sort of a perfect movie. It really did happen. So everything I had to do, I knew how to do,” Murray said. “And things that I hadn’t done before, I was able to live. And because it was all happening, really truly happening to me, it came across as a performance.”
What is the story of ‘Broken Flowers’?
In Jim Jarmusch’s 2005 drama-comedy ‘Broken Flowers’, Murray plays Don Johnston, an emotionally detached ex-computer mogul who is content enjoying an easy-going retirement, watching old movies and listening to music. The film kicks off with his current girlfriend Sherry, played by Julie Delpy, breaking up with him and moving out, which doesn’t seem to bother him all that much.
That same day, he receives a letter in a pink envelope supposedly from one of his exes telling him that he has a 19-year-old son that may be looking for him. At first, he just ignores it, but his mystery-novel enthusiast neighbor does some digging.
A while later he gives the former Don Juan a list of five names of women that might have sent the letter along with maps and a mix tape. Then sends Don off on a road trip to find out if it could’ve come from one of these past partners. During the journey, Don goes through a transformation, rediscovering himself, awakening from his stupor and seemingly finding a new purpose in life.
