Jennifer Lawrence says she lost a major Quentin Tarantino role for not being “pretty enough”
Lawrence reveals she was passed over for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” in favor of Margot Robbie, following Sharon Tate’s sister’s praise of Robbie’s looks.

Hollywood history is full of “what ifs” - iconic roles actors wanted but didn’t get, or parts they were passed over for. Jennifer Lawrence recently shared one of her own: losing the role of Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” to Margot Robbie, reportedly because she was “not pretty enough.”
Lawrence revealed the story in a candid interview with the renowned journalist Josh Horowitz. Back in 2017, rumors suggested both Lawrence and Robbie were frontrunners for the role. According to Lawrence, she was initially Tarantino’s top choice — but the part ultimately went to Robbie.
“I wasn’t ‘pretty enough’ for Sharon Tate”
“He wanted me for the role, and then everybody was like, ‘She’s not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate,’” Lawrence told Horowitz.
Horowitz pushed back, suggesting he didn’t fully believe that was the case. But Lawrence, now 35, stands by her account. ““I’m pretty sure it is true. Or it’s that thing where I’ve been telling the story for so long that way, I believe it. I’m pretty sure that’s true, or he just never was considering me for the part and the internet just went out of its way to call me ugly.”

Sharon Tate’s sister publicly backed Robbie
The conversation wasn’t limited to fans and gossip. Debra Tate, Sharon’s sister, openly supported Margot Robbie for the role. “She’s just, I don’t know, she’s not pretty enough to play Sharon,” Debra said of Lawrence at the time, echoing the same reasoning cited online. “My pick would be Margot, simply because of her physical beauty and the way she carries herself, it’s similar to that of Sharon.”
