‘Loki’ producer on turning the MCU villain into a hero in season 2
Producer Stephen Broussard shares details into Loki’s hero journey in the upcoming second season.
‘Loki’ is a series that follows a Loki variant who embarks on a journey through time and space for the mysterious Time Variance Authority (TVA).
As a result, this alternate version of Loki adopts a new character journey that producer Stephen Broussard says will transform Loki into a hero in the new season.
Loki’s new character arc
Broussard, who is also VP of Production and Development at Marvel Studios, discussed new story elements of ‘Loki’ season 2 on the ‘D23 Inside Disney Podcast.’
“I don’t wanna say too much,” he said.
He continued, “It’s very exciting. I think that team has done an amazing job. I think the most exciting thing to tease is, going back to our conversation earlier about characters, is just kind of watching Tom [Hiddleston] and watching Loki’s journey. Like continuing a journey.”
While Loki started down a “heroic arc” in season 1, Broussard assures fans that this storyline won’t be dropped.
“He was always a little bit of this outsider in Asgard in the royal palace there and I think season 1 was about discovering that he could be more,” he said.
He goes on, “So I’m excited for people to go on that journey with Loki in the hands of Tom, who is one of the most amazing actors that I’ve ever had the good fortune of working with.
“It’s amazing to watch him work, watch his range. I think audiences will be excited to see what else he can do with this character,” Broussard exclaimed.
Loki throughout the MCU
The God of Mischief has made a total of seven appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe including ‘Thor’, ‘The Avengers’, ‘Thor: The Dark World’, ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and the ‘Loki’ series. He was also featured in three episodes of the MCU’s anthology series ‘What If…’
At the start of his extensive history, Loki has generally been portrayed as a villain with plans of conquering both Asgard and Earth. During this time, he was a proper antagonist to his older brother, Thor.
From roughly around ‘The Dark World’ and ‘Ragnarok’, Loki switched from being a supervillain to an antihero. His actions became less cataclysmic as he leaned into his name as the God of Mischief and became an occasional ally to Thor.
However, the variant Loki in the television series is thrust onto a new journey when he’s shown his life in the canonical timeline of the MCU and emotionally decides to change. This sets him down a hero’s journey that is promised to continue with the new season.
‘Loki’ season 2 is slated for a summer 2023 release.
