Oscars 2024: what is the first award presented?
It’s a party that will once again be hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel (his fourth time), and it will feature various stars who will present each of the awards. The awards even have a predetermined order of presentation.
A list has been announced detailing each of the 23 categories that make up this awards gala, which will begin at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT (local time). We hope you remembered to put your clocks forward overnight!
As is customary in all galas, the most prestigious categories will come towards the end of the night, starting with the Oscar for Best Director, followed by the categories of Best Actor and Best Actress, and culminating the ceremony with the Oscar for Best Picture.
The Oscars ins and outs
It’s fair to say that when the nominations for the Oscars were announcement there was quite the cocktail of surprises and snubs, leaving Hollywood and those further afield arguing the toss over the wisdom of those decisions. Among the notable omissions was the absence of a Best Director nod for Greta Gerwig and her box office smash “Barbie,” though she and collaborator Noah Baumbach did secure recognition for their adapted screenplay.
Notably missing from the acting categories was Margot Robbie, whose multifaceted role as both star and producer in the Best Picture nominee raised eyebrows. Ryan Gosling, himself a nominee for his portrayal of Ken, voiced his disappointment at this, echoing the sentiments of many fans.
Adding to the intrigue, Leonardo DiCaprio, despite his illustrious past Oscar triumphs, found himself without an acting nomination for his role in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” However, the spotlight shone on his co-star Lily Gladstone, marking a significant milestone as the first Native American to be nominated for Best Actress. America Ferrera’s rebound was another headline, clinching a Best Supporting Actress nod for her work in “Barbie” following a surprising snub at the Golden Globes. Justine Triet’s recognition as the eighth woman nominated for Best Director, for her film “Anatomy of a Fall,” further underscored the evolving landscape of inclusivity and talent recognition in the industry.
