More details regarding the King’s Coronation have been revealed, with King Charles’ nine-year-old grandson intended to have a bigger role than previously anticipated. This change regarding The Prince and Princess of Wales’ son will be a break in Royal precedent.

The Times reports that Charles and Queen Camilla are both keen that their grandson George, a future king, shall be given a prominent role, while not exposing him to excessive scrutiny at his young age.

The Royal historian Hugo Vickers, explains to The Times, “Bringing George in also sends all the right symbolism for the future and gives him something he will always remember. It is certainly different — this coronation is getting more interesting by the minute.”

A blended Royal Family

In addition, Queen Camilla’s grandchildren and the king’s step-grandchildren will also be given prominent official roles in the upcoming ceremony. The coronation is set to take place on May 6 of this year at Westminster Abbey.

This “blended family” will be quite a jump into modern thinking for the Royals. As said in a statement by the Palace, this event will “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.”

Who are the Queen’s Grandchildren?

Queen Camilla has five grandchildren, all in their teenage years and who generally stay out of the limelight up until now. Their relatively quiet lives are set to change in just a few months.

According to The Times, Camilla has asked that her grandchildren hold the canopy above her as she is anointed with holy oil, which is a significant part of the ceremony.

The last Coronation

In contrast, Charles watched his mother be crowned in 1953 from the balcony with the rest of the congregation. He was seated in between the Queen Mother and his aunt Princess Margaret to make him as visible as possible.

He had no official royal role in the ceremony. However, Charles was only five years old at the time.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have three children in total. Prince George is the oldest, Princess Charlotte, 7, is the middle child, and Prince Louis, 4, is the youngest of the three.

There’s no word yet whether the younger two of Charles’ grandchildren will also have official roles in the ceremony.
