Update:

The Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, the photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, have died in an apparent homicide, amid reports that the pair were killed by their son.

“Heartbroken by this sudden loss”

The couple’s deaths were confirmed in a family statement shared with media outlets on Sunday. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” a spokesperson said. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

In a news conference, Los Angeles Police Department’s deputy chief, Alan Hamilton, said authorities had on Sunday afternoon found “two deceased individuals” inside Reiner’s home in Brentwood, an upmarket L.A. suburb.

Hamilton said a “death investigation” would be conducted by the “homicide special section of [the] robbery-homicide division” at the LAPD. He did not confirm the identity of the bodies found at the residence on Chadbourne Avenue, noting that this would be the responsibility of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

The LAPD’s investigation “will move forward through the night”, Hamilton said, adding: “Tomorrow morning we will probably have additional information regarding what occurred here on Chadbourne and our investigation moving forward.”

Citing “multiple sources who have spoken with family members”, People magazine has reported that Reiner and Singer Reiner were killed by their son, Nick Reiner. Nick, 32, is now being questioned by the LAPS, People added. A source with knowledge of the investigation has told the Los Angeles Times that Reiner and Singer Reiner’s injuries are consistent with stab wounds.

A legendary Hollywood director

Reiner, 78, was an actor and filmmaker who rose to fame for his role as Mike “Meathead” Stivic in the 1970s CBS comedy All in the Family. In the 1980s, he established himself as a hugely successful film director, helming a whole host of Hollywood favorites. They include 1984’s This is Spinal Tap, 1986’s Stand by Me, 1987’s The Princess Bride. 1989’s When Harry Met Sally and 1990’s Misery.

Reiner, who divorced first wife Penny Marshall in 1981, married Singer Reiner in 1989. The couple have three children: sons Jake and Nick, and daughter Romy. Reiner also has an adopted daughter, Tracy, from his first marriage.

“A devastating loss”

Among those who have paid tribute to Reiner and Singer Reiner are the former U.S. president and first lady, Barack and Michelle Obama.

“Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen,” the Obamas said in a statement. “But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people - and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.”

Kathy Bates, who starred in Misery, told NBC News: “I’m horrified hearing this terrible news. Absolutely devastated. I loved Rob.

He was brilliant and kind, a man who made films of every genre to challenge himself as an artist. He also fought courageously for his political beliefs. He changed the course of my life.” Bates added that Singer Reiner was a “gifted photographer”.

The L.A. mayor, Karen Bass, described Reiner and Singer Reiner’s deaths as “a devastating loss for our city and our country”.
