After their recent engagement and latest joint music release, Rosalía and Rauw Alejandro are opening up about their relationship, both romantically and as musical collaborators.

The couple released their first EP titled ‘RR’ in honor of both their first names last Friday, and in reference to the three songs on the EP which center on their relationship and on the theme of love.

They focused on their relationship before making music together

In a recent rare interview given by the pair with Billboard, they relate how well they work together, and the process involved in making music together for the first time.

“We wanted to make our relationship solid and build its foundations, and then, if music was meant to come, it would come,” said Barcelona native Rosalía.

While Rosalía and Rauw, real name Raúl Alejandro Ocasio Ruiz, have been together for four years, they refrained from making music together, and have largely kept their relationship quiet and out of the spotlight of their larger-than-life careers.

“Plus, we were in different stages in our careers, and we wanted to make our fans focus on what we were doing, which was our individual projects,” the Puerto Rican artist Rauw added.

“People love drama in the entertainment world, and a romantic relationship will always take precedence,” he continued. “We felt if ours came to light, the effort we’ve both done toward our projects and our music would come second.”

The duo, both 30, have spent the majority of their careers focused and determined to make the kind of music that they love.

“I love the absolute independence they have with their creations, their careers and their ideas,” said Afo Verde, the Sony Music Latin Iberia chairman/CEO. Verde invited the couple to record portions of their ‘RR’ EP at the Sony Music Latin Ibera studio in Miami.

“But you clearly hear both of them in what they’ve done together,” he said of their joint production.

Complementary creative processes

When the two artists met in Las Vegas at the 2019 Latin Grammy Awards, their admiration for each other’s work led to Rosalía writing two songs for Rauw’s debut album ‘Afrodisiaco’ released in 2020.

“Rosi has a more solid music base than I do in the sense that I’m more extroverted in my music, but she’s far more disciplined,” Rauw said of his fiancée. They acknowledge that where Rosalía is a “freak-crazy workaholic”, Rauw is more laid back and calm.

“I tell her my secrets, and she tells me hers. The same energy I put into my things, I put into hers.”

I’m more of an overthinker in terms of the music process, and it’s helped me a lot [when doing] music with him because he’s super intuitive,” Rosalía said.

The two also admit while they are in a relationship with each other, they are essentially each other’s representatives and this motivates them to elevate everything they do to the highest level.

“If I’m going to go out there and do something crazy, I sometimes think, ‘Heck, no: I’m Rosalía’s boyfriend.’ I need to raise the bar, understand? We’re taking care of our prestige and our work and ensuring it always looks the part. We motivate each other to keep rising to an infinite level,” Rauw said.

Their EP ‘RR’ is available to stream on all major streaming platforms.
