It’s official! Selena Gomez and David Henrie are to return as Alex and Justin Russo, in a sequel to the fantasy sitcom Wizards of Waverly Place.

On its TikTok account, the Disney Channel announced the news in a post that showed several clips from the original series, before cutting to a shot of a script reading “Wizards, ‘pilot’” on the front page.

“We’re back” - Gomez confirms Waverly Place return

Gomez also confirmed Wizards of Waverly Place’s return on social media, taking to Instagram Stories to post a throwback image of herself on set with Henrie, alongside the caption: “We’re back.”

Meanwhile, Henrie reposted the Disney Channel’s video on his TikTok profile, writing: “The Russos are excited to become a part of your family once again, but we’ve grown. 2024, the year the magic comes back!”

A show that ran for four seasons from 2007 to 2012, Wizards of Waverly Place focused on the siblings Alex, Justin and Max Russo, three teenage wizards living on the titular street in New York’s Greenwich Village.

What do we know about Wizards of Waverly Place sequel?

While the announcement of Wizards of Waverly Place’s comeback has generated huge excitement among fans, it has been reported that Gomez will only return to the new show for its pilot episode.

Henrie will once again be a series regular, with both actors working on the series as executive producers.

According to information exclusively revealed by the entertainment news outlet Deadline, the revived Wizards of Waverly Place picks up the storyline in a world where an adult Justin has chosen not to use his magical powers anymore, instead opting to live a regular life together with his wife and children.

However, “he gets a surprise when a powerful young wizard in need of training shows up at his door… and Justin must embrace his past to ensure the future of the Wizard World”.

It is not yet known whether the forthcoming production will also witness the return of other major Wizards of Waverly Place cast members, such as Jake T. Austin (Max), Jennifer Stone (Harper Finkle), Maria Canals-Barrera (Theresa Russo) and David DeLuise (Jerry Russo).
