Foo Fighters performed the second show in their comeback tour on Friday night, and they were joined on stage by a very special guest.

The son of late drummer Taylor Hawkins, Shane, joined the band as they performed at the Boston Calling music festival at the Harvard Athletic Complex in Allston, Massachusetts.

The 17-year-old played drums as the group performed ‘I’ll Stick Around’. It isn’t the first time he’s joined the band on stage, as he played ‘My Hero’ at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium last September.

“How about we do a song with one of my favorite drummers in the world?” Dave Grohl told the audience before the song.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Shane Hawkins!”

Foo Fighters played their first full concert of 2023 in New Hampshire on May 24. The show saw them perform with newly-announced drummer Josh Freese, who took on the role following Hawkins’ passing last year.

It isn’t yet clear if Freese is a permanent member or just filing in for live shows.

The band were scheduled to play the music festival last year, but dropped out after the 50-year-old’s unexpected death.

Hawkins died while touring with the band in Colombia on March 25, 2022.

Grohl’s message for fans

During Friday’s show, Grohl admitted it’s been a struggle to get back on stage following the passing of Hawkins.

“I’m gonna do it for Taylor’s family, and I’m gonna do it for Taylor, because we used to sing it together,” he said.

“So our band is truly like a family. Because we’ve been together for so long, we truly love each other. So tonight, all of our families are here because we have to do this together.”

Grohl also welcomed his daughter Violet on stage for two songs later in the show, and ended the night by dedicating the band’s hit ‘Monkey Wrench’ to “Shane and the Hawkins family.”
