The Hollywood icon who was the first to win an Oscar for directing while also starring in a film

Many actors move into directing as their careers evolve, some manage to do both throughout their entire professional lives and winning awards for both.

Woody Allen Annie Hall

Many of Hollywood’s greatest actors have shifted their careers and become celebrated directors, sometimes achieving even greater success behind the camera. Names such as Mel Gibson, Clint Eastwood, and Kevin Costner have directed films that received both critical acclaim and major awards, including Oscars for Best Director.

However, one filmmaker has maintained both roles throughout his career, often appearing as a leading or prominent character in his own films: Woody Allen. In fact, the New York filmmaker became the first director to win the Academy Award for Best Director for a film in which he also starred, with Annie Hall in 1977.

How Woody Allen made Hollywood history

Most directors who appear in their own movies do so through brief cameos or very minor roles. A small group of filmmakers, however, have proven capable of handling both directing and acting with remarkable skill, sometimes delivering outstanding results in both areas.

Woody Allen is one of those rare figures. Over the course of his career, he has appeared in more than a dozen of his own films, establishing himself as a distinctive and influential presence in Hollywood.

It is quite unusual for someone to be nominated for Academy Awards as both an actor and a director for the same film. One early example was Orson Welles, who received multiple nominations for Citizen Kane, including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture.

The first person to win the Oscar for Best Actor for a film he directed himself was Laurence Olivier for Hamlet. But who was the first director to win the Academy Award for Best Director for a film in which he also acted? The answer is Woody Allen.

Woody Allen achieved that distinction when he won the Oscar for Best Director in 1977 for Annie Hall, the iconic romantic comedy that also won the awards for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Diane Keaton won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film.

A similar achievement did not occur again until 1981, when Warren Beatty won the Oscar for Best Director for Reds, a film in which he also starred. The third director to accomplish the same feat was Clint Eastwood in 1992 with Unforgiven.

Annie Hall was considered groundbreaking at the time because of the experimental storytelling techniques Allen incorporated into the film. These included the distinctive breaking of the fourth wall and moments in which characters directly shared their emotions and thoughts with the audience.

Years later, Woody Allen explained why he chose to include these elements in Annie Hall: he felt that many viewers shared the same feelings and concerns as the characters. He wanted to speak to them directly and confront those emotions.

In the United States, Annie Hall is currently available to stream on numerous platforms such as Prime Video and MGM+.
