Laurence Tureaud became an icon of 1980s film and television thanks to his unforgettable role as Mr. T in The A-Team. With his imposing muscles and charismatic presence, he gained worldwide fame—especially after his debut in Rocky III.
It wasn’t just his physique that made him a household name. His signature mohawk haircut became a defining part of his image, almost as iconic as the character himself.
Before finding success in Hollywood, Tureaud served in the Army and held a variety of jobs, including working as a nightclub bouncer and bodyguard. During this time, he began wearing large gold chains, which he claimed represented the victories he earned in wrestling. It was then that Sylvester Stallone took notice of him and cast him in the Rocky saga—launching his acting career.
From there, the rest was history. Mr. T’s role in The A-Team cemented his global fame. But when the series ended, his prominence in the entertainment industry faded, and he eventually stepped away from the spotlight.
In 1995, he was diagnosed with cutaneous lymphoma, a form of cancer he battled until 2001. During this difficult period, he leaned deeply into his faith. “I used to say, ‘I believe in God,’ but after the cancer, I started saying, ‘I depend on God,’” he revealed in an interview with Fox News.
Since then, Mr. T has largely lived a quiet life, although sports and fitness remain central to his routine. His social media often features videos of his training regimen—even at 73 years old. “I thank God for blessing me with another year. I am very grateful for my health and strength. Since God has blessed me, I will share my blessings with others. God has blessed me so that I can be a blessing to others. And I will share my blessings with my less fortunate friends,” he wrote on Instagram.
