Update:

Fictional soldier John Rambo is set to make a comeback, but this time the valiant ex-army man will not be played by Sylvester Stallone. Millennium Media is working on an officially confirmed prequel, for which new details have just been announced. Lionsgate (John Wick) has signed an agreement with Millennium Films to distribute the next Rambo film.

Anthony and Joe Russo’s production company, AGBO, will be responsible for producing the film, while the Russo brothers themselves will serve as executive producers, according to an official statement from Lionsgate:

“The entire AGBO team is led by Anthony and Joe. They are innovative creatives who deliver the most emotional and inventive action storytelling in contemporary cinemas around the world,“ said Charlotte Kohn, Lionsgate executive. ”Combining our longstanding partnership with Millennium Media with Jalmari’s innovative work and visceral uniqueness, we are confident that John Rambo will become a must-see cinematic event for fans.”

One of the key figures in action cinema

Angela Russo-Otstot, CCO and producer of the film through AGBO, has emphasized the importance of Rambo as one of the most important figures in action cinema: “Exploring the origin of his mythology is an incredibly exciting opportunity.” She defines the character as “a force of nature,” but what really sets him apart “are his principles, his codes” and his sense “of what is right,” as well as “his willingness to risk everything to defend” these values.

The story of the new ‘Rambo’ film will take place during the Vietnam War and will be filmed in Thailand. Jalmari Helander (‘Sisu’) will direct the film, in which we will see Rambo operating as a soldier in the US Special Forces. According to Deadline, Noah Centineo is already in final negotiations to play the character.
