The nominated actress who is under fire for old racist tweets: “For the love of God don’t give this woman an Oscar”
The star of ‘Emilia Pérez,’ has issued an apology for sharing racist and offensive comments on X, formerly known as Twitter.

This Thursday, Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón faced backlash over several controversial posts that resurfaced on social media. These posts included racist and offensive comments about George Floyd, Islam, Muslims, and even some celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Adele.
Karla Sofía Gascón deletes offensive social media posts
Social media users shared multiple screenshots of the actress’s posts. In one, Gascón described George Floyd as a “drug addict swindler.” In another, she wrote, “Islam is becoming a hotbed of infection for humanity that needs urgent curing.”
Following the uproar over her posts, the actress issued an apology. “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused pain. As someone who belongs to a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness,” she said in a statement to Variety.
Despite her apology, many users continue to criticize her actions. “You’ll need much more than apologies to make up for the 300 tweets that attack, belittle, discredit, and humiliate people who didn’t even know you existed. You were mean, you were ruthless, you showed no empathy. Now face the consequences! Besides that, we want a statement from the Academy! You don’t even deserve to get close to the ceremony’s door,” one user shared.
What did Karla Sofía Gascón say about Fernanda Torres?
Karla Sofía Gascón is facing criticism for her comments about Fernanda Torres. The backlash came just a day after Gascón made headlines by accusing people close to Torres, who is also nominated for Best Actress at this year’s Oscars, of attacking her and the film Emilia Pérez.
“What I don’t like are the social media teams, the people working with these individuals, who try to undermine our work, like mine and my film’s, because that leads nowhere. It’s unnecessary to tear down someone’s work to highlight another’s. I’ve never said anything bad about Fernanda Torres or her film. However, there are people working with Fernanda Torres who are tearing me and Emilia Pérez down. That says more about their film than mine," Gascón said in an interview with Brazilian outlet, Folha de S. Paulo.
Gascón’s statements went viral on social media, and many users on X claimed that her comments violated the Academy’s rules against making disparaging remarks about another contender. However, according to Variety, the Academy concluded that no rules were broken since Gascón did not specifically comment on Torres’s performance or film. Later, the Emilia Pérez star issued a statement addressing the situation.
“I am an enormous fan of Fernanda Torres and it has been wonderful getting to know her the past few months. In my recent comments, I was referencing the toxicity and violent hate speech on social media that I sadly continue to experience. Fernanda has been a wonderful ally, and no one directly associated with her has been anything but supportive and hugely generous,” she told Variety.
