Ryan Gosling sings "I'm Just Ken" live at the Oscars.
Some argue that Ryan Gosling’s Ken upstaged the lead character in the Barbie movie, especially with his emotional performance of the song “I’m Just Ken”. And with the retro-fitted video of the track and the various spin-offs getting millions upon millions of views on YouTube, the visual vibe has turned to more intrigue over the lyrics that were chosen.
It wasn’t just about Ryan and his fellow ‘Kens’ treating us to an explosion of faux dance routines; there was a little more plastic-layered depth to it, and we thought we’d take a look. Read our full coverage to better understand the meaning of the hit song.

Summary so far: 96th Oscars
Host Jimmy Kimmel welcomed everyone to the Oscars, and as usual tried to roast a few of the guests, although some of his jabs were rather more cringe than punchy. Robert Downey Jr. looked embarrassed at the “Is that an acceptance speech in your pocket or do you just have a very square p****. Meanwhile Bradley Cooper and his mum could only manage a very polite laugh at “how many times can you bring your mum as a date before your dating your mum.”
And then it was onto the Oscars!
First up was Da'Vine Joy Randolph for Best Supporting Actress in the Holdovers. She gave an impassioned speech starting with “God is good” twice and ending thanking the women who had helped her throughout her career and, specifically, her publicist.
War is Over picked up Best Animated Short Film, inspired by the music of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Sean Ono Lennon was up with the filmmakers to accept the awards, and he gave a shoutout to Yoko on her 91st birthday and mother’s day in the UK.
The Boy and the Heron won Best Animated Film, with Hayao Miyazaki picture taking the Oscar.
Best Original Screenplay was won by Anatomy of a Fall, which is also up for Best Picture, remember. And Best Adapted Screenplay went to American Fiction.
Poor Things then went on a streak, taking Best Makeup and Hair, Best Production Design and Best Costume Design (Presented by a naked John Cena, no less, in a somewhat forced skit).

Biggest Oscars snubs 2024
Not everyone can be nominated for an Oscar of course, but how some of these were ignored is hard to believe.
Here's the biggest snubs of the 2024 Oscars...
Bradley Cooper - "Maestro"
Bradley Cooper directed and starred in the biopic about legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein in "Maestro". He is up for a nomination for Best Actor, but somehow not for Best Director. It was, however, nominated in seven other categories - Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound, Best Cinematography, and Best Picture
Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie - "Barbie"
While America Ferrerra's nomination for "Barbie" is well-deserved, the snubbing of Greta Gerwig caused quite the uproar. "Barbie" was the highest-grossing film of the summer, yet didn't even get a nomination for Best Director.
Margot Robbie, the lead actress, AKA Barbie herself, was also not nominated for Best Actress, despite winning the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy Musical.
Even Ryan Gosling, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in "Barbie", spoke about the snubs.
"There is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie," said Gosling, "No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement."
Leonardo DiCaprio - "Killers of the Flower Moon"
DiCaprio went a long time and with many incredible and noteworthy performances without winning an Oscar, but this year, he wasn't even nominated for his starring role in "Killers of the Flower Moon". The leading actress, Lily Gladstone, however, did receive a nomination for Best Actress. She expressed her disappointment that Leo wasn't there alongside her.
"I told him how upset we all were. My nomination is equal parts his," said Gladstone. "I would not have been able to do what I did without his generosity as an actor and as a human being."
Cillian Murphy's mom's reaction to his nomination
"Sometimes a gesture is just better."
Cillian Murphy is up for his first Oscar nomination for his performance in "Oppenheimer" and he shared his mom's reaction with Scott Pelley. It's adorable.

Did you know...
Only 18 Black women have won an Academy Award in Oscars history?
That's just 0.005% of all Oscars awards.
While that number is embarrassingly small, we could see at least a 19th tonight with Da’Vine Joy Randolph up for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "The Holdovers". She's already won awards from BAFTA, SAG, Critics Choice, AND the Golden Globes, so the Oscar would really just be the final piece. Only one person has ever NOT been awarded an Oscar after winning in all other ceremonies Russell Crowe in "A Beautiful Mind").
First time acting nominees list
There's actually quite a few actors and actresses up for an Academy Award for the very first time tonight! Here's who's nominated for their first acting award...
Emily Blunt
Sandra Hüller
Jeffrey Wright
Lily Gladstone
Cillian Murphy
Danielle Brooks
America Ferrera
Sterling K. Brown
Colman Domingo
Da'Vine Joy Randolph
Godzilla team coming in STYLE
Godzilla Minus One already won Best Picture at the Japanese Academy Awards, and it could make Oscars history if it wins Best Visual Effects tonight. If their team wins, Kiyoko Shibuya would be the first woman of color to win the award and just the third female to win it (after Sara Bennett for Ex Machina in 2016 and Suzanne M. Benson for Aliens in 1987).

Kimmel has hosted the Oscars in 2017, 2018 and 2023 and is the host for the 2024 edition at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
The usual run time for the ceremony is about three and a half hours, from the time the host, in this case Jimmy Kimmel, begins with his first jokes to liven up the evening, until the Oscar for Best Picture is awarded, which is usually the last of the awards to be delivered.
Steven Spielberg, history-maker
Iconic filmmaker Steven Spielberg turned 77 last December but he remains one of the most influential figures in Hollywood. Oppenheimer clear favourite for bookies
The Christopher Nolan blockbuster is odds on favourite to scoop the Best Picture award and comfortably leads the likes of Poor Things and The Zones of Interest.
At present, betting aggregator 'Odds Checker' has Oppenheimer as the sure thing to bag the gong.
The third film from the Best Picture list we’ll look at is 'Barbie', the film that has not left anyone indifferent this year. It has been the highest grossing, but as for awards, despite having nominations, it has not shined.
The star of the Oscars after-party: Raúl Garrido, the Spanish ham cutter
Once the Oscars are over, it's time for the after-party. And one of the protagonists of the night will be Raúl Garrido. He will be in charge of putting the best ham, which of course, will be Spanish (At AS we may be a little bias on this matter...). Nothing more and nothing less than Cinco Jotas, the best of the best. Raúl will be the one to cut and place it. He has a lot of work ahead of him: ten legs of Cinco Jotas ham that will surprise all the top guests at the party. He will be assisted by another Spaniard, Carlos Sánchez, the second slicer.
This is the second time Raúl will be in Hollywood to fulfil this task. "They eat with the hand and although some want to be more polite, I tell them that with the hand is the best," he said.
The first time was in 2019 and the ham was one of the most talked about among all those who tasted it.
Raúl is from Badajoz, born in 1986. At first, he directed his career towards wine, but then he took a turn and focused on ham. He is the official Cinco Jotas cutter in New York and in September 2023 he returned to his homeland as a judge for the VII Ham Cutters Contest in 'Badajoz, the Iberian Capital', which was held in the Plaza Alta of the the capital of Extremadura.
Smith hit the headlines for the wrong reasons at 2022 ceremony, slapping Chris Rock to land himself in trouble with the Academy.
