Update:

Charlize Theron has appeared in more than 50 movies in her 30-year career, which inevitably means there are some which didn’t live up to her initial expectations.

In an interview with The New York Times, which also featured “The Old Guard 2” co-star Uma Thurman, the South African-born actress spoke of her disdain for 2005 science fiction action film “Æon Flux," based on the animated TV series of the same name.

The flick has just a 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while 23 critics on Metacritic have awarded it an average score of only 36 out of 100. Judging by Theron’s comments, that shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Charlize Theron’s movie injuries and operations

The 49-year-old revealed the movie was one of many in which she had suffered an injury during filming, although her “Æon Flux” mishap was an especially painful one.

“I run into people and they’re like, Oh, what happened to your arm?” explained Theron. “And I’m like, ‘oh, I just had surgery.’ And they’re like, ‘the last time I saw you, you had surgery!’”

“I had an unfortunate injury on the first action attempt I ever did, for a bad movie called ‘Æon Flux.’ On day nine, I did a back handspring, and I didn’t get enough height, and I landed on my neck on a concrete bridge.”

Theron knew “bad movie” would be “a flop”

In a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Theron had previously stressed her concern that “Æon Flux” would derail her career just a year after she had won an Academy Award for Best Actress for “Monster”.

“This is going to sound so ‘poor me,’ but I do feel like sometimes, as women, we get one shot and I knew that Æon Flux was going to be a fucking flop.”

Things, of course, didn’t work out that way, but Theron reveals becoming one of the world’s highest-earning actresses has been a painful process.

“I’ve had surgery on both elbows, my right shoulder, my thumb, carpal tunnel, fractures. A lot of fractures. But I’m also accident prone, so I’m not blaming anybody.”
