This is what happens if you call the “missing teen” phone number from ‘Stranger Things’

In the first episode of the new season of ‘Stranger Things’, a phone number appears on a flyer - and you can call it.

After three years away, Stranger Things returned with big surprises. Released late last month, the first part of season 5 has left millions of fans with sky-high expectations for Volume 2 and the eagerly-anticipated series climax.

Following the release of Volume 1, die-hard fans began dissecting the first four episodes and uncovered a clever Easter egg in episode 1. If you call a phone that appears in the season opener, you’ll actually get a response from the police department in Hawkins, the fictional Indiana town where the show is set.

A hidden phone number in episode 1

In the opening episode, there’s a “Missing Teen” notice from the Hawkins Police Department as authorities search for Jane Hopper - better known as Eleven - played by Millie Bobby Brown. The flyer, posted at Hawkins High School, lists an Indiana area phone number: 765-303-2020. Curious fans dialed the number and got an answer.

What happens when you call the number from Stranger Things?

When you call the number on the flyer, you hear this recorded message: “Thank you for contacting the Hawkins Police Department. Due to the recent 7.4 magnitude earthquake, Hawkins is currently under lockdown. To ensure the safety of our residents, the Hawkins Emergency Taskforce is working closely with Hawkins PD to track down missing persons, of which Jane Hopper is a priority. We urge you, as a responsible citizen of Hawkins, to assist us in our search to locate her.”

The number has been circulating since January, when it appeared in a social media post promoting the new season. At that time, fans discovered the number was active and played the message above.

When does Stranger Things 5 Volume 2 drop?

Season 5 of Stranger Things is rolling out in three parts. The first four episodes (Volume 1) premiered on November 26. The next three episodes arrive on Christmas Day, December 25, and the series finale will be released on New Year’s Eve, December 31. Volume 2 and the final episode will all be available starting from 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT on their release days.
