Update:

In ‘Havoc’, Gareth Evans’ new action thriller, Tom Hardy plays the lead as as Patrick Walker, a homicide detective who gets himself entangled in a complex drugs bust involving corrupt members of the police and the mafia. ‘Havoc’ is set in an unnamed US city but was shot in south Wales.

The movie has shot to number one of Netflix’s viewing charts just days after its April 25 release. But the public’s reaction has centered around Hardy’s strange American accent, which viewers are struggling to place.

Tom Hardy struggled to nail American accent in ‘Havoc’

One offered a suggestion Hardy’s articulation might be an attempt at a Boston accent. One quipped “Tom Hardy’s attempt at the American accent will never not be funny - it’s like he doesn’t even try” while others couldn’t place it at all. Hardy freely admits that perhaps he “might not have nailed” Walker’s midwest accent.

It’s not the first time that the 47-year-old British actor has played an American character. He starred as US soldier Lance Twombly in Black Hawk Down, US Marine Tommy Riordan Conlon in Warrior, Virginia bootlegger Forrest Bondurant in Lawless...

Hardy enjoys trying out different accents and describes his theatrical voice as ‘mellifluous’ - meaning smooth, musical and pleasant on the ear. “It’s a collage of places, people, things, feelings... It’s irrelevant. If you understand me, that’s all that matters!

He explains how he delves into the characters he plays. “Once I’ve picked a character’s shell, or understand some of the fabric of their internal patterns and what type of person we’re going for within a wheelhouse, then a lot of the guys you’ve described, they’re all very primal, and instinctive. They’ll be some kind of mammal, I don’t play many reptiles”.

We wait with bated breath to see which role Hardy plays next in his curious world of voices and accents.
