Update:

Hôtel De Roxie— the name Lenny Kravitz gave to his stunning Parisian townhouse, in memory of his late mother Roxie Roker, who passed away in 1995. At 60 years old, the musician opened the doors of his majestic mansion to Architectural Digest, revealing that the property once belonged to Countess Anne d’Ornano.

“It might not be what you’re looking for, but you have to see it,” his real estate agent told him when he was scouring the French capital for a new pad in the early 2000s - something bijoux, with just a couple of bedrooms.

Realizing a mother’s dream

Kravitz first visited Paris in 1989 while promoting his debut album, Let Love Rule. When he started dating singer Vanessa Paradis, he decided to move to the French capital permanently.

The singer turned 60 last year - not long after being honored with the 2,774th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And this month he opened the doors of his Parisien abode, nestled away in the 16th arrondissement to Architectural Digest.

“This place is called Hôtel De Roxie, it’s named after my mother because it was her dream to come and live in Paris. She wanted to retire, after doing 11 seasons of The Jeffersons and she never got to do it,“ the Grammy-winning artist explains as he shows AD around. ”So, I’m doing it for both of us. This place is a real gift“.

On entering Kravitz’s Parisian mansion, you are met with a stunning Steinway grand piano with African motifs, which Kravitz helped design himself and takes immense pride in. “This house continuously honors my ancestors, and as you walk through it, you’ll see photographs of them everywhere. Each of these pictures tells a story through Black, American, and African history,” he says.

The home features a room dedicated to his mother and another inspired by Muhammad Ali, while other influences can be found dotted around the place such as a Richard Avedon portrait large scale print of John Lennon taken in 1967 and other works by masters, Gordon Parks and Weegee.

Lenny defines his residence’s style as “’Soulful elegance’ - it’s being elegant, sophisticated but with soul, with your heart, with your spirit”.

Kravitz artwork and memorabilia of his idols

Other priceless artworks adorn the walls among the chic interior design including a Warhol silkscreen print of Muhammad Ali and the centerpiece - a striking canvas by the late Jean-Michel Basquiat Untitled (Black Figure), painted in 1984.

No rock star’s home would be complete without some music memorabilia - Lenny has several James Brown original items which he bought at auction - the Godfather’s boots and denim jumpsuit take pride of place in the library alongside books, sculptures and a deck for playing vinyl.

In the studio, more collectors’ items from all of the people who have influenced him during his life and career - Jimi Hendrix’s cord trousers, clothing owned and worn by Prince, Bob Marley, Miles Davis, John Lennon...

Working up a sweat in the basement

The real “heart and soul” of his Paris home is in the basement, which he has converted into a nightclub Le Chaufferie (the Boiler Room) to entertain guests get down to some superfunky superbaad choons.

Thanks for popping by,” purrs Kravitz as we leave, “Next time you’re in Paris, ring the bell”.
