The Miss USA 2024 competition is fast approaching, bringing renewed attention to the world of beauty pageants. While Miss USA and Miss America are often confused, these two prestigious competitions have distinct differences in their history, format, and goals.

Miss America, established in 1921, is the older of the two pageants. It originated as a bathing beauty contest in Atlantic City. In contrast, Miss USA was founded in 1952 by Catalina Swimwear after a dispute with Miss America over swimsuit appearances. Thw winner would receive a contract to work at Catalina.

The two different formats

The most significant differences lies in their competition formats. Miss America eliminated its swimsuit portion in 2018, focusing instead on interviews and a talent showcase. Miss USA, however, retains the swimsuit competition and does not include a talent portion.

The age requirements also differ slightly. Miss America contestants must be between 17 and 25 years old, while Miss USA allows participants aged 18 to 28.

The winner of Miss USA goes on to represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant, giving it an international focus. Miss America, on the other hand, concludes with the national title, which results in scholarships for study and education.

Ownership and operation of the pageants also differ. Miss America is run as a non-profit organization. Miss USA, previously owned by Donald Trump, is now operated by the for-profit Miss Universe Organization.
