Margot Robbie portrayed Harley Quinn, the iconic Batman villain, for DC studios in three films: ‘Suicide Squad’ (2016), ‘Birds of Prey’ (2020), and ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021).

Now the torch is being passed on to Lady Gaga who is set to play the female trickster in the upcoming ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’. While the film has yet to be released, there are already a few key differences between Gaga and Robbie’s Harley.

Make-Up

Robbie’s Harley featured a much more fun and playful makeup look. Throughout the three movies, her face was made to look incredibly pale and she typically wore bright red lipstick with a black heart on her cheek.

Blue and pink were used in her platinum blonde hair and for bold eye looks. She also consistently wore colorful, fun outfits that stood out on screen.

Gaga’s Harley seems to be aiming for a more mature look. Her make-up is kept somewhat light with only a red lip and black diamonds over her eyes.

Her outfit consists of a scarlet blazer with a diamond pattern and a black and white diamond-printed blouse.

Overall, there were many more creative liberties taken with Robbie’s look whereas Gaga’s combined elements from the character’s comic book persona and the first ‘Joker’s aesthetic.

Gaga’s Harley will be in a musical

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ has since been confirmed to be a musical. According to Variety, the film will feature several “complicated musical sequences” with this aspect of the movie being similar in nature to ‘A Star is Born’, which also features Gaga in a lead role.

While little is known about the musical aspect of ‘Joker 2′, given Gaga’s extensive musical background, it might be safe to assume that she will appear in a number of musical sequences.

Robbie’s version of the character did not partake in any musical numbers.

Harley Quinn and Joker’s relationship

The romantic relationship between Robbie’s Harley and Jared Leto’s Joker was hardly explored. Though it was portrayed as a love story between two unhinged criminals and one that many fans seemed to idolize.

However, in the comic books, Harley and Joker are typically portrayed as being in a wildly unhealthy relationship. Given ‘Joker’ 2019′s incredibly dark tone, it’s suspected that ‘Joker 2′ will highlight the darker aspects of their relationship.
