While some celebrities have publicly sworn off attending the Met Gala, others have burned their bridges with the prestigious ball and are not welcome.

Anna Wintour, chairperson of the Met Gala since 1995, has only ever declared one person banned from the prestigious fundraiser. That person is Donald Trump, who was reportedly banned back in 2017.

Wintour is editor-in-chief at Vogue, and curator of the annual Met Gala guestlist.

Trump has been to numerous Met Galas, especially between the years of 2004 and 2012.

Other celebrities won’t be invited because of their previous public statements against the event and while not officially “banned” are nonetheless unwelcome.

Tina Fey

Tina Fey renounced the Met Gala in 2010. “If you had a million arms and all the people you would punch in the whole world, they’re all there,” Fey declared to David Letterman in 2015 on ‘The Late Show’. “It is so unbelievable. Clearly, I’ll never go again.”

“But you go, and it’s this beautiful space and it’s just every jerk from every walk of life is there wearing, like, some stupid thing.”

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow is tired of being let down by the hype of the Met Gala and no longer has any interest in attending.

“[It aways] seems like it’s the best thing in the world,” Paltrow said in 2013 on Australian radio show ‘Kyle and Jackie O’. “You always think, ‘Oh my god, it’s gonna be so glamorous and amazing’ and you’re going to see all these people and then you get there and it’s so hot and it’s so crowded and everyone’s pushing you.”

“I think we’re all a bit old to dress up punk.”

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato told Billboard in 2018 that she wouldn’t go to the Met Gala ever again because at the 2016 event “one celebrity was a complete b***h and was miserable to be around. It was very cliquey. I remember being so uncomfortable that I wanted to drink.”

Lovato, who is open about being a recovering alcoholic, said she then went to an AA meeting afterward. “I changed my clothes, but I still had my diamonds on—millions of dollars of diamonds on in an AA meeting,” she explained. “And I related more to the homeless people in that meeting who struggled with the same struggles that I deal with than the people at the Met Gala—fake and sucking the fashion industry’s d***.”

Jameela Jamil

The actress called out the Met Gala last year for honoring the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. In an Instagram post, she wrote, “Last night Hollywood and fashion said the quiet part out loud when a lot of famous feminists chose to celebrate at the highest level, a man who was so publicly cruel to women, to fat people, to immigrants and to sexual assault survivors. And all the women’s publications, and spectators online, chose to gleefully ignore it.”
