Who is Nick Reiner? What we know about Rob Reiner’s son who was questioned by the LAPD about his parents’ death
Filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, the producer and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, died this weekend, it has been confirmed.
Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, is a person of interest in the couple’s deaths, the New York Post has reported.
People magazine adds that “multiple sources who have spoken with family members” have alleged that Nick was responsible for his parents’ deaths. Entertainment Tonight, meanwhile, has reported that Nick was allegedly “involved”. He is now being questioned by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), People reported.
“Heartbroken by this sudden loss”
The deaths of Rob Reiner, a filmmaker best known for movies such as Stand by Me, and his wife Michele, a producer and photographer, were confirmed by a family spokesperson on Sunday. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” a statement read.
In a news conference, the LAPD’s deputy chief, Alan Hamilton, said authorities had on Sunday afternoon found “two deceased individuals” inside a home on Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood, an upmarket suburb of L.A.
Hamilton did not confirm the identity of the bodies, noting that this would be the responsibility of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. He said a “death investigation” would be conducted by the “homicide special section of [the LAPD’s] robbery-homicide division”.
Hamilton said the LAPD’s investigation “will move forward through the night”, adding: “Tomorrow morning we will probably have additional information regarding what occurred here on Chadbourne and our investigation moving forward.”
Multiple media outlets, including the L.A. Times and NBC Los Angeles, have cited sources revealing that Reiner and Singer Reiner’s injuries were consistent with stab wounds.
Who is Nick Reiner?
Born on September 14, 1993, Nick is the second son of Reiner and Singer Reiner, who married in 1989. Alongside Nick, the couple had two further children - son Jake and daughter Romy. Reiner also has an adopted daughter, Tracy, from his first marriage.
In 2015, Nick co-wrote a movie that was directed by his father: Being Charlie, a drama starring Nick Robinson as Charlie Mills, a teenaged addict.
“I spent weeks on the street”
Speaking to People in April 2016, Nick Reiner said the movie drew on his own struggles with addiction. “It’s not my life,” he said of Being Charlie, but added: “I went to a lot of these places, so I had a lot of these stories.”
Nick also spoke of his experiences of living rough amid his addiction battles. “I was homeless in Maine,” he told People. “I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas. I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun.”
Appearing at a Q&A as he promoted Being Charlie alongside Rob, Nick opened up on the pair’s relationship. Explaining that he had found it difficult to “bond” with his father as a child, Nick said the experience of making a film together had brought the pair closer to one another.
“He really liked baseball, I liked basketball,” Nick said. “He could watch that with my brother, baseball. When I saw him do that [filmmaking] and it was something that I’m interested in, it was like: ‘Wow, he really knows a lot’. And, like, it made me feel closer to him.”
