The film is an adaptation the first act of the 2003 stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Holzman, which was loosely based on Gregory Maguire‘s 1995 novel, a reimagining of the Oz books and the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.

The film stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum in supporting roles and has been nominated for 10 Oscars at Sunday’s LA ceremony.

The film was a massive global success taking more than $720 million at the box office and its runaway success has paved the way for a follow up.
