100 days of DOGE: What Elon Musk and Donald Trump have done in the first 100 days in office
In Trump’s first 100 days back in office, he and Elon Musk, the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, have reshaped the federal government.

Donald Trump is now 100 days into his second term as the president of the United States. Elon Musk, the unelected head of his new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has tried to overhaul the federal government in that time, although without much success.
Here’s an overview of what Trump, Musk, and DOGE have accomplished in those first 100 days.
100 days of DOGE
The DOGE department was created to slash bureaucracy and get rid of “waste”. In 100 days, Musk and his team have fired over 100,000 federal employees, dismantled agencies, and cut spending, often for no apparent reason and with no lasting impact.
Here’s a breakdown of what DOGE has done so far...
- Fired or offered early buyouts to over 100,000 federal workers, targeting probationary employees first
- Dismantled some agencies
- Cut spending, targeting foreign aid, research, and modernization efforts
- Ordered employees to return to physical office spaces despite there being insufficient space, supplies, or internet.
The initial goal of the department was $2 trillion in savings, but that was later cut to $150 billion. Trump and Musk have claimed that the department uncovered “hundreds of billions” in fraud and saved $160 billion. But court documents as well as independent reviews dispute those claims, showing widespread exaggerations, legal violations, and data mismanagement. The true savings documented were closer to $63 billion, but even that is disputed. On top of that, the deficit has increased with government spending up 10% and revenues up just 3%.
We're almost 100 days into DOGE and federal government spending is up 10% from the same period last year and revenue is only up 3%.

Not only has DOGE reshaped the government workforce since its inception, but it’s also gained extensive access to sensitive information, leading to over a dozen lawsuits which allege illegal access and misuse of data.
The consequences of DOGE’s actions include low morale as the cuts have significantly impacted government operations/services, workers receiving mixed signals after being fired, hired, and fired again, and nationwide protests against the department and Trump’s cuts.

Musk has said he’ll reduce his involvement in the day-to-day activities, but that he’ll continue to “prevent waste from coming back” by working part time. Even still, the impact of what’s already been done in these first 100 days will be long-lasting and much of the damage is already done.
