Social Security payments continue to be sent out. Each month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) issues millions of checks throughout the US to beneficiaries of the program, who are mostly retired workers.

Who is eligible for Social Security in retirement?

Anyone who has worked for at least 10 years and has reached the minimum retirement age - which is currently 62 - is eligible to receive monthly payments, as long as they paid all required Social Security taxes during their working life. The amount a retired worker receives depends on various factors.

The chief variables that determine exactly how much a person is paid are: the total number of years the beneficiary worked for; the recipient’s age when they requested their pension; and the amount they earned during their career.

Monthly retirement benefits averaged $1,840 in August 2023, the SSA says.

What other Social Security programs are there?

The SSA also offers disability benefits, and pays survivor benefits to widows, widowers and dependents of eligible workers. The agency also has a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) scheme for people with little or no income who are over 65 or have a disability.

What are the September Social Security payment dates?

According to the SSA, Wednesday 27 September will see the fourth of a total of five Social Security payment runs scheduled for this month, with checks going out on:

  • Friday 1 September
  • Wednesday 13 September
  • Wednesday 20 September
  • Wednesday 27 September
  • Friday 29 September

Who gets their Social Security payment on 27 September?

Because of the large number of payments the SSA has to process each month, checks for retirement, disability and survivor benefits are sent out in batches determined by the recipient’s date of birth.

Beneficiaries born between 1st and 10th of the month receive their money on the second Wednesday of each month; those born between 11th and 20th get their checks on the third Wednesday; and those born between 21st and 31st are paid on the fourth Wednesday.

This timeline doesn’t include retirement recipients who began seeking their pension before May 1997.

As 27 September is the fourth Wednesday of the month, this batch of payments will be going out to beneficiaries whose dates of birth begin 21 through 31.
