Update:

New York State will be sending eligible residents the state’s first-ever inflation refund checks to help counter the affordability crisis they’ve faced over the past few years. The amount taxpayers will receive, between $150 and $400, will be based on filing status and income.

New Yorkers who filed a 2023 tax return in the state and meet the eligibility criteria won’t have to do anything to get the one-time payment as the checks will be mailed automatically says the Department of Taxation and Finance. The checks will start being mailed in mid-October and will be sent to the address used on a taxpayer’s most recent tax return filed.

Checks will be mailed out over several weeks beginning in the middle of October. The tax agency advises that residents may receive their check sooner or later than their neighbors, as they won’t be sent based on zip code or region.

All eligible New Yorkers will receive a physical check; no direct deposits will be made. The Department of Taxation and Finance provided the image below of what the checks will look like that residents should be on the lookout for.

The New York tax department warns that it cannot provide a specific delivery schedule and representatives will have no information about the status of a taxpayers check.
