500,000 barrels of pesticide were dropped off the Los Angeles coast up to 1982: Decades later, marine species are still contaminated
The shocking scale of an ocean pollution scandal has become clearer as scientists study its effects on marine life today.

Every year, vast quantities of pollutants enter oceans around the world as a result of human activities such as industry, agriculture and waste disposal, creating dangerous consequences for marine ecosystems.
Perhaps one of the most significant cases of ocean pollution was the dumping of DDT-contaminated industrial waste into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Los Angeles, particularly near Santa Catalina Island and the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
The pesticide once hailed as a lifesaver
DDT, which stands for dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, is a synthetic chemical pesticide that was widely used during the 20th century to kill insects. During and after World War II, it was used to control mosquitoes carrying diseases such as malaria and typhus, earning Swiss chemist Paul Hermann Müller the 1948 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
However, it later emerged that DDT had devastating effects on certain wildlife, particularly birds of prey, with studies also linking long-term exposure to potential health risks in humans. After pressure from scientists and environmental groups, the U.S. government banned most uses of the pesticide in 1972.
The Los Angeles coast’s toxic legacy
A decade later, records and investigations revealed that between the late 1940s and 1982, approximately 500,000 barrels’ worth of industrial waste, including acid sludge contaminated with DDT, had been discharged at offshore disposal sites in the Pacific Ocean by the Montrose Chemical Corporation, one of the United States’ largest producers of the pesticide, and a company called California Salvage.
At the time, ocean dumping was considered an acceptable method of waste disposal, but the consequences proved far more persistent than expected. DDT is highly resistant to breaking down, meaning it can remain in marine sediments for decades.
That has, in turn, had a damaging effect on various marine species, which are still suffering the consequences of the toxic dumping more than 40 years later.
DDT still found in marine food chains
According to a chemical analysis study conducted by San Diego State’s School of Public Health and published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters, zooplankton, the tiny drifting animals in oceans, lakes and rivers that cannot swim strongly against water currents, collected in 2024 contained detectable levels of DDT-related chemicals, 42 years after the dumping had stopped.
That may have given scientists a better understanding of how one separate recent study found significant quantities of DDT-related chemicals in dolphins and condors, while another linked the pesticide to an aggressive cancer in sea lions.
Although further investigation is still required, it is believed to be a sign of a poisoned ecosystem and food chain. Because DDT accumulates in organisms’ tissues and becomes more concentrated higher up the food chain, contaminants detected in zooplankton can eventually reach larger fish, marine mammals and seabirds that feed on them.
Pollution doesn’t disappear
More than 40 years after the dumping stopped, the case serves as a reminder that pollution does not simply disappear when it leaves the public eye. The chemicals released into the Pacific Ocean decades ago are still moving through marine ecosystems, showing how environmental damage can continue long after the original source is gone.
