Florida State University in Tallahassee issued an active shooter alert around noon (local time) on Thursday, April 17. According to early reports, the incident took place in the area of the student union. Authorities are already on the scene.
“An active shooter has been reported in the Student Union area,” the university announced in a post on X. “Police are on the scene or en route. Continue to shelter in place and await further instructions. Lock all doors and stay away from windows. Be prepared to take additional protective actions.”

Suspect has been arrested
According to two officials, the suspect is now in police custody. However, students remain under shelter-in-place orders, while law enforcement urges anyone in need of immediate emergency assistance to call 911 or FSUPD at 850-644-1234.
The identity of the shooter has not yet been released.
Multiple injuries reported
So far, six people have been transported to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Hospital, a hospital spokesperson said in a statement to media outlets. One is described as being in “critical condition”, with the remaining patients said to be in “serious condition”.
“We continue to work closely with emergency services and public safety authorities. Out of respect for patient privacy and to ensure the accuracy of information, we will provide updates as soon as they become available,” Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare said in a statement.
Reacting to news of the shooting, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that he had been “fully briefed” on the incident. “It’s a shame. A horrible thing,” Trump said from the Oval Office, where he was holding a meeting with the Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni.
