After the cold front that entered the north of Texas a few days ago, the National Weather Service (NWS) has launched a new alert for the threat of severe weather in the Lone Star State that could cause damaging winds and “one or two tornadoes.”

According to Fox News meteorologists, the disturbances will take place in the Rocky Mountains, specifically in the area known as Tornado Alley, which extends from Texas to Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska , Kentucky, Iowa, Minnesota, and the Dakotas. The bad weather will begin in the south of the country, starting in Texas, and will move north.

How long will the bad weather last? Affected areas

Temperatures will begin to drop starting Thursday night, April 25. According to the NWS, severe rains with large hail are expected in most of the state, although the Fort Worth - Dallas area will be the most affected, with risks of witnessing from one to two tornadoes. Residents of the area are urged to remain alert to possible alerts and/or warnings. The bad weather will continue until Sunday, April 28.

“The threat of severe weather will continue on Saturday and Sunday. Large hail, damaging winds and one or two tornadoes will be possible. In addition, the risk of flash flooding will increase west of I-35 Saturday night,” warns the Fort Worth NWS.

Identify an alert vs. tornado warning

Given the weather forecast, it is extremely important to know how to differentiate between a tornado watch and a tornado warning to know how to respond. Alerts indicate that weather conditions are favorable for a tornado to occur, although the phenomenon does not often take place. However, it is essential to follow the instructions of the authorities to prevent any catastrophe.

Meanwhile, tornado warnings mean that a tornado is imminent or even already underway, so immediate action must be taken and people should take shelter in a safe place as soon as possible. In these cases, authorities classify basements or any other interior room as safer places to be. It is important to avoid windows, and to try to have as much protection as possible.
