With the jury awarding Johnny Depp $15 million in the defamation suit agains ex-wife Amber Heard, there are reports that she may not be able to afford to pay. How can this be possible? Surely, she must have many millions of dollars. Well, maybe not.

Several reports list her net worth as being in the region of $8 million, although one report has put it as low as $2.5 million.

Earning $10 million in total during the period between 2013 and 2019, Heard revealed in her testimony that she subsequently had a four-picture deal with Warner Brothers that would have paid her $450,000 for the first film, followed by $1 million for the first Aquaman. She would receive $2 million for the sequel, and if a third or fourth were ever filmed, then she would be guaranteed between $3 and $4 million each for those roles. So far, this deal would have netted her $3.45 million.

Additionally, Heard received $1.8 million for her appearance in “The Stand” and a further $1.65 million from L’Oreal.

In her divorce settlement with Depp, Heard was reported to have been awarded $7 million, which she has promised to donate to charity, specifically the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and the ACLU. As revealed in the trial, the Children’s Hospital has only received $100,000 and the ACLU has only received $1.3 million, of which $500,000 came from Elon Musk, another former romantic partner of Heard’s. This should leave $6.1 million of the divorce settlement in her coffers.

A rough tally so far would suggest that her income since 2013 should be in the region of $23 million, but of course, income is only half of the story. Her outgoings have reportedly been substantial, particularly in legal fees for the UK libel suit and the defamation suit in the Virginia courts. Depp, as the loser of the libel suit, would have had to pay for the lion’s share of her legal expenses in the UK, but it is unlikely with such a top-notch team, that Heard would have escaped any financial responsibility.

With even half of her income eaten into, her net worth today would be in the $12.5 million range, making any payment on the $15 million award very unlikely as it would be considered ruinous. It is very probable that the award will be reduced on appeal, as there are reports even now that the $5 million awarded punitively may be capped at $350,000 by law. This may not be the end of this sorry saga, yet, and how much Ms Heard comes away with in the end is anybody’s guess.
