Archaeologists agree in Pompeii: evidence emerges of a desperate double escape during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius

Remains that have been found 2000 years after the disaster that occurred in Pompeii.

One of the most well-known disasters in human history took place in A.D. 79 in Pompeii, the prosperous Roman city near present-day Naples that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The natural catastrophe preserved the city in extraordinary detail, providing a unique snapshot of daily life in the first century. Today, archaeologists continue to uncover new remains, and recent excavations revealed two skeletons just outside the walls of the ancient city.

A man now known as Pliny the Younger watched the disaster unfold from Misenum, across the Bay of Naples. Years later, he described the horrors he witnessed in a letter, writing that residents had “tied pillows to their heads for protection against the rain of rocks.” At dawn, people carried torches to see through darkness that was “blacker and denser than any night.”

A failed escape from Pompeii ends in tragedy

Now, archaeologists have uncovered two skeletons outside the city walls that lend further credibility to Pliny’s account. The first victim, a man around 35 years old, died shortly after the eruption as volcanic ash rained down over the city. The second victim, a man between 18 and 20 years old, likely died from pyroclastic flows several hours later.

The older man was found near a terracotta bowl that researchers believe he may have used to shield his head. He was also carrying a small oil lamp. Using artificial intelligence, the research team reconstructed the man’s likely escape route through the debris-covered streets of Pompeii while holding the bowl above his head for protection.

The two men appear to have been trying to flee the city and reach the coast. Tragically, neither survived, and today their remains offer another glimpse into what happened on that fatal day nearly 2,000 years ago.
