Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world. Every day, millions of people make it part of their routine, whether it’s to kick-start the morning, finish off a meal or enjoy an afternoon break. Its versatility and flavor have made it a staple at almost any time of day.

Now, cardiologist and social media educator Aurelio Rojas has shared a TikTok video discussing the findings of a major scientific review on coffee and explaining the potential health benefits linked to drinking it.

“As a doctor, I’m surprised, because science has finally answered whether coffee is good or bad for your health,” Rojas says at the start of the video.

“The largest scientific consensus on coffee’s health benefits has just been published by the American Heart Association, and the results are truly surprising,” he explains before summarizing the findings.

“People who drink coffee have a 10% lower risk of heart attack, a 20% lower risk of stroke and a 30% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. They also have a lower risk of heart failure and even some types of cardiac arrhythmias."

Cafeteros atentos !! 📚 Referencia científica Marcus GM, Hu FB, van Dam RM, et al. Why could coffee be beneficial for your health?

Rojas says the findings may challenge long-held assumptions about coffee and heart health.

“We’ve told so many people to cut back on coffee because of palpitations, but the polyphenols and antioxidants in coffee improve blood vessel function, reduce inflammation and increase insulin sensitivity,” the cardiologist explains.

He then points to what the research suggests is the upper limit for maintaining those potential health benefits.

Up to 400 mg of caffeine per day

“The bottom line is that people who consume moderate amounts of coffee have better cardiovascular health,” Rojas says.

“That applies to people who drink between two and five cups of coffee per day, up to a maximum of 400 milligrams of caffeine."

One important warning about coffee and LDL levels

Before ending the video, Rojas offers one final piece of advice.

The coffee should be filtered‚" he says. “Unfiltered coffee can increase LDL (’bad’) cholesterol levels.”

“Good news for coffee lovers,” he concludes.
