Update:

Michael Lewis is an author and journalist with an eye for spotting ‘cut-through’ stories in the bewildering world of financial journalism.

He authored ‘Moneyball’ and ‘The Big Short’, both of which were later turned into wildly successful movies. Lewis has been called “a kind of guru of our age” and is well-placed to identify the changing currents in American life.

Last week he gave an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald in which he took aim at President Donald Trump. He said that he was shocked by Trump’s collaboration with Elon Musk on the ill-fated DOGE cutting spree, which fell some way short of the lofty promises.

Lewis was deeply critical of the cuts implemented by the White House and warned about the damage that they are doing to the United States, both at home and overseas. He was also pessimistic for the future of the Republican Party, given how much sway Trump holds over the GOP.

He said: “We’ve lost our mind at the top of the country right now. It’s gonna snap back. But... the problem is you need elections to do that, and in the very short term, Donald Trump terrifies anybody who’s running for office as a Republican, or holds office as a Republican. So they’re marching in lockstep with him. But that could break… these things move fast."

Despite Trump’s bombastic claims, the reality of his proposed federal spending cuts is that many millions of Americans may well be worse off. New requirements for Medicaid recipients, for example, will be catastrophic for many Americans.

Lewis explained: “I think that [Trump has] created conditions for things to get even worse for lots of people, not just the economy. There’s going to be an ill, ill feeling in the air. And assuming we have a free and fair election, and I assume we will... I think he’s going to get shellacked. I think they might lose both houses.”

“And once they’re on the run, once the bully gets punched, it’s amazing what happens in the school yard. So I just think someone needs to punch the bully.”
