Update:

As the calendar flips over to 2026, visions attributed to the late Bulgarian mystic Baba Vanga have surged across social media and news platforms. And let me tell you, dear reader, it’s not ‘PlayStation 5s for all’ and ‘the world’s largest marrow grown in Norfolk’.

Decades after her death, Vanga’s name has again become attached to a set of dramatic future scenarios that are generating both fascination (and scepticism) around the world, and they’ve been linked to potential happenings in 2026.

Baba Vanga died in 1996, when Tamagotchi and Dolly the Sheep were all we had to worry about, yet her prophecies are still very much alive today. Her work is often likened to Nostradamus, and she built her reputation on a series of alleged predictions about major world events.

While her followers claim she foresaw significant 20th and 21st century moments such as attacks on the United States and various political upheavals, the lack of verifiable documentation means many of these attributions remain contested by anyone who takes these things seriously.

As said, she’s not predicting random spurts of Sunflowers popping up in the countryside, or an increase in the number of happy lambs in the fields: the set of forecasts most talked about for 2026 centres the possibility of a major geopolitical conflict breaking out.

Reports circulating online claim that Vanga predicted a conflict involving major powers that could destabilise global peace. However, details vary, and if I’m honest, you could pitch me the idea of global conflict at any point in the past 100 years and my response would be “yeah, certainly feels like it”.

Natural disasters constitute the second recurring concern, which have now been linked to 2026. According to several reports, Vanga’s visions are said to include an increase in earthquakes, volcanic activity and extreme weather events. The scientific warnings about climate-driven changes in environmental patterns are certainly more prominent that ever thanks to backwards policies from politicians (naming no names), though the connection to a mystical prophecy from a blind Bulgarian is a matter of debate.

Third, one of the more sensational elements of the 2026 narrative involves artificial intelligence. In many of the stories tied to Vanga’s name, there is an assertion that AI could reach a level of influence over human affairs that challenges human control. I can’t find any quotes from Baba about Sam Altman, or even work out if she’s watched the Lex Fridman podcast episode with Max Tegmark, but I’ll leave the paper trail hunting to you.

I went back and checked what Baba predicted for 2025, and it’s safe to say that she was well wide of the mark. Humans did not discover telepathy and Lewis Hamilton did not win his 8th World Championship. Nor did aliens make contact with Earth during a major sporting event. Having said that, Trump did attend the Super Bowl...
