Check your collection of dusty VHS tapes: you may have a treasure trove worth thousands of dollars

Many households still see large number of old vinyl albums, audio and VHS cassettes lying around in the closets and storage rooms. In the modern age, these are seen by many as obsolete junk with the majority of homes not having the hardware to play these old analogue formats anymore.

However, before major spring cleaning or move, think twice before binning certain titles as there is a niche but vibrant market for collectible titles that you may have in that old VHS collection.

Finnish collector Ville Lähde also maintains his own YouTube channel and website called Videospace where he showcases the most expensive VHS releases with the website offering users to see an average price based on the titles in their collection.

Currently topping the list is the rare 1979 VHS release of the sci-fi film Buck Rogers. Its average price is currently €1,051.50.

Star Wars originals and Disney originals also rank among the valuable VHS titles that are still in demand in the second hand market.

Experts claim that films from popular franchises, cult classics, or obscure genres often see an increase in value because they have a dedicated fanbase or on the odd occasion, because there’s simply no other way to view them.

So, when trying to spring clean or simply attempting to free-up space, think twice about disposing of that dusty old box of video cassettes.
