The death of the English singer/songwriter has saddened many, but her songs will live on forever.

On Wednesday evening we found out the news that Christine McVie, a member of the British-American band Fleetwood Mac, had died at the age of 79. The sad news was shared via a statement posted on her official Facebook page by her family.

Fleetwood Mac, named after its founders’ surnames - bassist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood - formed in 1967 but had many members come and go over the years. Christine Perfect, born on July 12, 1943 in northwest England, joined the band as a singer and pianist in 1970 after marrying John after a two-week courtship. She eventually abandoned him to live with a lighting technician.

What were Fleetwood Mac’s greatest hits?

In 1977, the band released the album entitled Rumours, which was recorded while Christine and John were going through divorce proceedings. That album went on to sell more than 40 million copies and is one of the best-selling albums of all time,

Last year, specialist website Songwriter put together its top ten all time songs from the band. Everyone will have their own views, but I find it hard to disagree.

  • 1. Dreams
  • 2. Go Your Own Way
  • 3. Landslide
  • 4. Little Lies
  • 5. Don’t Stop
  • 6. Everywhere
  • 7. Rhiannon
  • 8. Tusk
  • 9. Big Love
  • 10. Gypsy

“Keep Christine in your heart”

The family said that she died peacefully in hospital on Wednesday after a short illness.

We would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician who was loved universally,” the statement said.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Fleetwood Mac said she was “truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure. She was the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life. We were so lucky to have a life with her.”

“She will be so very missed.”
